Network Services What is Portable Appliance Testing?
All users of electrical equipment, as well as their employers, directors and managers,
have a responsibility to ensure that all electrical equipment is safe to use.
This responsibilty can be met by performing in-service inspection and testing comprising
  • user checks
  • formal visual inspections (without tests)
  • combined inspections and tests


  • What should be tested?
  • All electrical equipment which is attached to a standard mains socket outlet,
    e.g., IT equipment, network equipment either housed in a network cabinet or free-standing,
    office equipment, kettles, small power supplies for CD and MP3 players, phone chargers, multiway adapters, etc.

  • Fixed equipment which connects via a fused spur: hand driers, dishwashers, etc.

  • Low voltage (110V) construction equipment


  • How often should inspection & testing be carried out?
  • Users of electrical equipment should visually inspect every item before using it

  • Formal inspection and testing should be carried out in accordance with the guidelines
    specified by the IEE Code of Practice, table 7.1.

  • An office or community establishment, e.g., church halls should have a formal inspection every 12 months
    and testing every 2 years unless specified otherwise.
